The celebrity tabloid site TMZ (which also has a new television show) has recently started showing live feeds. Usually those feeds are set up at a busy intersection, where those with no lives of their own can sit all day and try to spot celebrities walking by.
Today, they set up another live feed …. at Ike Turner’s funeral. Ike Turner is, of course, the ex-husband of singer Tina Turner. They performed together decades ago as “Ike and Tina Turner”. Tina Turner wrote a book (made into a movie) called “What’s Love Got To Do With It”, in which she detailed the vicious abuse she allegedly suffered at the hands of Ike Turner.
Needless to say, Ike Turner was not exactly a well-loved celebrity, even though his name remains instantly recognizable.
TMZ, however, had not been invited to the funeral. They just showed up and set up a live feed without permission. Given TMZ’s reputation for unrelenting vicious attacks upon celebrities and their families, and given Ike Turner’s notoriety, they clearly weren’t there in a respectful stance. They were there to take cheap shots at the deceased and the mourners, as evidenced by their statement:
Earlier in the day, we posted video of Ike marrying a woman who claims to be Ike’s other wife. But here’s the problem, Ike’s other other wife is in the church right now — probably a little pissed off.
Not at all surprisingly, mourners caught on and told them to get their video camera and get the hell out of the funeral. Good for them.
Now, I will admit, I like reading celebrity news when I’m bored, though the level of stalking involved in tabloid “news” is sometimes ridiculous. However, this goes entirely too far. It’s beyond celebrity stalking. It’s a gross invasion of privacy, and frankly, I have to wonder about the mentality of anyone who would think setting up a live feed at a funeral was even marginally acceptable, especially if they didn’t even bother to ask the family first, or even tell the family what they were doing.
I also have to seriously wonder about the readers who were cheering TMZ on in their bizarre quest to disrupt a funeral. Is nothing sacred these days?
