Nun killed during archaic exorcism ritual
February 1, 2008 by ElfNinosMom
A priest and four nuns in Romania have been convicted of killing a young nun during an archaic exorcism ritual.
Irina Cornici, age 23, had previously been diagnosed as schizophrenic. She came to believe that the devil was talking to her, which of course is a sign that her schizophrenia had become active again.
However, rather than take her back to a psychiatrist, the priest and nuns chained her to a cross, bound her, and denied her food and water for four days, in an exorcism ritual the Orthodox Church itself had previously condemned as “abominable”.
Miss Cornici died of dehydration, suffocation, and exhaustion. The priest (Daniel Corogeanu) and four nuns, previously excommunicated from the Romanian Orthodox Church for their actions in performing the “exorcism”, were sentenced to five, six, and seven year prison terms.
It is so sad that, with all the advances in psychiatry, someone was still thought to be possessed by demons when they displayed clear signs of psychosis.
Honestly, I suspect the priest and nuns who did this to her are crazier than she ever was.
