By now, the entire world knows the story of Lori Drew and Megan Meier; Megan committed suicide after being hoaxed by an adult on MySpace. In case you haven’t heard about this for some reason, perhaps because you have been living with aboriginal folks in some far-flung area, my previous entires are here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here, and here.
I actually didn’t realize I had written that much about it, until now. Hmmm. At any rate, Lori Drew has spoken to the reporter who originally broke the story, with regard to her telephone problems (but she wouldn’t discuss anything else, since a Grand Jury is still investigating her for having defrauded MySpace). Here is the part I found most interesting.
Q: I was told someone hacked into your cell phone and changed your outgoing greeting. If so, what did they change it to? Was this investigated?
“Someone changed Curt’s and my phone greetings on our cell phones. We were notified by one of my advertisers that called and heard the message. He then called back to leave me a message to check my voice greeting.
“We changed our greetings to basic greeting which only listed the phone #. Two hours later the old greeting appeared on our phones.
“We contacted our cell phone provider to disconnect the phone #’s, and to find out how someone could change our voice messages. The provider had no clue as to how the voice message changed. They said someone must have known or figured out the pass codes.
“A policeman was here when this took place, because someone had contacted the police department and said that they were worried about us because they couldn’t get through to us on any of our phones. We have not been advised of any investigation by the police or the cell phone provider.
“The message was someone impersonating me and said something to the effect that, ‘This is Lori Drew the world famous MySpace murderer, if you would like some advice about how to kill a beautiful teenager, you have come to the right place.’”
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Ahem …. sorry, I just had to get that hysterical laughter out of my system.
You can read Lori Drew’s whinefest in its entirety here.
Who hacked into Lori’s phone? Apparently no one knows, and there would be so many suspects that they may never figure it out. I still get Google alerts on Megan Meier, and people are still actively discussing it, and still posting her personal information online.
The catalyst for the article seems to be that Lori Drew’s old phone number was assigned to another customer, and now they’re getting “I hope you die” messages, although she had absolutely nothing to do with any of this. I feel badly for her.
Responsible bloggers, let’s spread the word that the cell phone number no longer belongs to Lori Drew, so if people leave harassing and/or threatening messages on it and the new owner of that number get them, they are no better than Lori Drew because now they are harassing an innocent person, just like Lori did to Megan.
No matter how I look at it, though, this is all Lori Drew’s fault, including the harassment of the next person who got her cell number.
However, the cell phone company should have retired the number. Perhaps now they will. We can only hope.
[...] Adventures In Frickintardistan wrote an interesting post today on Someone hacked Lori Drew’s phone; are we actually supposed to care? Here’s a quick excerptBy now, the entire world knows the story of Lori Drew and Megan Meier; Megan committed suicide after being hoaxed by an adult on MySpace…. [...]
Should I care about if Lori Drew is having a tough time?
Let me she she retaliated against a teen age girl who stopped being friend’s with her daughter and enlisted the help of other teens. She call Megan fat. Gee I guess her mirror is broken. She is a derainged evil woman who should be in jail and have lost custody of her children. Who cares that Lori Drew is being harrassed? Nope I don’t care. I too wrote about her, it has been a popular blog.
I do however feel for the person who got stuck with her old number. Years ago I was given a number that was supposed to be taken out of service. It seems it had been a pay phone number used for shall we say less than honorable purposes. No, I didn’t find it the least bit flattering all the messages from guys asking for “dates”. The calls I actually answered were really interesting.
It is called KARMA, EBB and FLOW, CONSEQUENCES, UNIVERSAL LAW. Sorry, but that is just how it works. It would sure be nice if we could choose our consequence for our actions…….. but we can’t …………………………. get it?????????? PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, DOING THE RIGHT THING………… YOU KNOW, ALL THAT STUFF.
I think that what Lori Drew did was wrong and reprehensible. She should be, and is being, held legally accountable as much as she was legally responsible.
However, when we practice “web mob” justice against her, and rejoice in her misery, then we are no better than her. Hasn’t it occurred to everyone what you are doing here is exactly what she did to Megan. If Lori Drew killed herself would that make everyone happy. Would everyone who had sent hate mail, made harassing phone calls or posted disparaging blog entries feel justified or would they feel guilty.
I would encourage everyone who reads this to stop condemning Lori Drew and instead take the time to look inside themselves and see where they are wrong and then make changes. Hatred can never fix hatred.
Ethan,
Writing about Drew’s heinous actions is not necessarily hatred. I have written about her and in all-time popularity of my posts it is the 2nd highest. At the time I wrote my post & probably when this was written nothing was happening to that woman.
I was appalled by Drew’s comments that she was being picked on and trying to blame Megan for the incident. Megan & Drew’s daughter used to be friend’s and had some sort of disagreement. Maybe Megan said or posted something about Drew’s daughter. However, Megan was an immature teen girls and that happens. Confront Megan and her parents would have been a reasonable solution. Enlisting the aid of minors to humiliate an another minor is inexcusable.
While I am not wanting Drew to kill herself I do think she should be punished. Further, I think her parental rights should be terminated immediately as she is obvious unfit to raise children. In fact, hate mongers like Drew should be prevented from having contact from anyone under 18.
DH
Hi, Ethan. What I am doing cannot be compared to what she did to Megan Meier. I have made no phone calls, sent no emails. I have not attempted to contact Lori Drew or anyone connected with Lori Drew, in any way. I certainly didn’t set up a fake profile and pretend to be Lori’s love interest, then set her up just so I could subject her to extreme harassment and public humiliation.
But even if I had done those things, Lori Drew is not a child.
So no, nothing I have done in my entire life can ever be compared to what Lori Drew did to Megan Meier.
ENM,
Would you mind if I write a follow up to the Drew thing sending people your way?
DH
Hi, Dee! Please do, I’d love to read your take on it.
I think its interesting how some of the news outlets were refusing to print Lori Drew’s name, even though she’d already confessed and tried to shrug it off as unimportant, despite Meier’s suicide. Now that she’s under inditement, she HAVE to print it. Hahaha.. fuckers
BTW, even though the cell phone number no longer belongs to Lori Drew, the Drews still live at the same house, the last I heard. They’ve installed a handful of video surveillance cameras, though.
I think Lori Drew has EVERYTHING bad coming to her. And besides doesn’t the golden rule say “treat others as…..” (I know – an extreme point of view)
I agree with ENM – no one has done anything to the caliber or extent of Lori Drew. She should be counting her lucky stars that someone hasn’t done something worse than blogging about the evil bitch she is!
Lori Drew is a predator. She premediatated her actions and engaged in sexual conversations with Megan. She deserves the maximum sentence. I don’t feel sorry for her AT ALL, nor do I hope she kills herself. As a mother of 3 girls, the oldest being 14 I find her actions horrifying, and I don’t mind saying so.
Lori,
I never thought about her as a sexual predator
To Lori Drew, the (sexual predator)
I myself believe that when you do something wrong you should take responsibility for it and try to fix what you broke.
So I ask you now to please go into your husbands closet and take one of his ties and to please hang yourself by the neck until you are dead.
Pete,
That really isn’t the solution. It makes you know better that her. Actually it would be better for Drew to loose her freedom and children for the rest of her life.
This whole incident has been blown way out of proportion. Lori Drew took the whole ‘mama bear’ thing too far, and did something silly and immature, but criminal? No way. That’s ridiculous.
Here’s the thing- the teen years are hard. Full of hurts and humiliations for many. Megan killed herself over something a virtual friend said. Not even someone she knew, but a stranger on the internet. If that’s all it took, what are the chances that something else wouldn’t have triggered her? Something like a break-up with a REAL friend or boyfriend. She was obviously extremely unstable and volatile, and should have never been allowed on the nasty internet in the first place. She was too young to have a MySpace. Her parents should have gotten her some intensive mental help. Why was her self-esteem so horribly low? What was going on at home that affected her mental health so deeply? If her parents didn’t know how disturbed she was, how the heck was Lori Drew supposed to know??? The responsibility here lies with the parents, and they are clearly looking to pass the buck.
How many times have you had words with someone over the internet, maybe even called them a name? What if Lori Drew kills herself over a comment written here? Should the author be charged? Only charged if they’ve used a fake name? Of course not! Charging Lori Drew with some made-up crime is the start of a very slippery slope here.
Sick,
Megan killed herself over something a virtual friend said.
The virtual friend was an adult impersonating a teenager for the purpose of destroying a young girl.
Not even someone she knew, but a stranger on the internet.
Josh aka Lori Drew knew Megan. They were neighbors.
Her parents should have gotten her some intensive mental help.
Her parenst had & she was on meds. Drew knew this.
Why was her self-esteem so horribly low? What was going on at home that affected her mental health so deeply?
From what I understand Megan had been treated very badly by some former friends including Drew’s daughter.
If her parents didn’t know how disturbed she was, how the heck was Lori Drew supposed to know??? The responsibility here lies with the parents, and they are clearly looking to pass the buck.
Megan’s parents were aware of the problem but so was Drew. She was using it against Megan. Drew’s final message to Megan “The world would be better off without you.” was the straw that broke the camels back.
As Drew saw the police and medical personal coming to Megan’s home. She called neighboring teens telling them not to say a word about what Drew had been doing.
What if Lori Drew kills herself over a comment written here? Should the author be charged? Only charged if they’ve used a fake name? Of course not! Charging Lori Drew with some made-up crime is the start of a very slippery slope here.
Drew hatched the plot in retalliaton for her little daughter’s feelings being hurt. It is a real crime.
BTW, have you seen any coverage of the incidents.
Megan was a disturbed kid with a drunk slut for a mom and dad, well he has a drunk slut for a wife and had a weak child who is now in hell where she wanted to be I think he is just as stupid as his family. Poor megan poor poor megan yeah right. Losers kill them self and a keyboard should not be blamed the fact is megan did not love life as much as death(hell) I am glad she died and hopeful that any other human that wants to die does. Kill-on
Friend,
What a companssionate response. Guess you never struggle with any weaknesses other than complete lack of empathy, a consciounous and social skills.
The keyboard wasn’t the problem it was the human using the keyboard. The same keyboard can be used type words of encouragement or words of hate it all depends on the human who is behind the keyboard.
D
Lori Drew is not in jail now is she if I were on the jury it would be a hung jury….She did nothing wrong…And the best part is ug,,,ug,,,I’m choking…….I am sorry I just choked on an M&M whew! Anyway I think myspace is for losers anyway they should be held liable they are for lonely loser with nothing better to do and for those dorks that can’t get a date in person, someone who wants to prey on little kid that their mom & dad turns their back so people can prey on them because a real mom or dad would not allow a child to pretend to be an adult. Say what ever I know my child is not talking to all or any of the losers on myspace.
Say what ever I know my child is not talking to all or any of the losers on myspace.
Usually said by parents who have no clue what their kids are really doing.
With Lori Drew and her trial in the news I decided to check back on this post and was surprised at how many comments there were.
I am amazed at how much anger and hatred a single act can cause. Wasn’t it Ghandi that said “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind”?
It seems that our society is so focused on justice that we often forget about mercy. Actually, we want others to be punished but we want to be forgiven. It is easy to forget that everyone one of us is not only a victim but, all too often, also the victimizer.
I don’t know if anyone has read this amazing store of forgiveness (http://amywelborn.typepad.com/openbook/2005/08/grace_and_a_fro.html) but I admire the personal strength and compassion of this woman. I wonder how the Megan Meier story had this been the path chosen by those involved.
In the end I believe that neither the Meier’s, nor the Drews (and don’t forget that their children are suffering), will find peace until forgiveness is given.
Good luck to everyone and have a Happy Thanksgiving!
To the idiot John,
MySpace is for losers? I’m a professional electronic musician with hundreds of thousands of plays on MySpace and fans in the tens of thousands. I guess that makes me a loser. Come to think of it though, in active social circles the losers are the people without social networking (MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn) profiles. That makes you the loser. Too embarrassed about your appearance, number of friends, and social popularity to have an account Johnny Boy???
Maybe someone will hang Lori Drew – the ONLY fit punishment for what she did!!!
If they used a fake photo of “Josh Evans” What is the parent of THAT child doing about all this crap?
Lori Drew is suppose to be an “adult” she needs to be held accountable for her actions. Looking at her smug facial character in photos she KNOWS what she did and she’s THINKING She can get away with it!
John, get a clue dude! Everyone in society has ‘issues’ of some sort, some larger than others, but it doesn’t mean that anyone deserves to die!
i hate to seem like someone who has no life, i actually do, but i have an extremely hard time with the fact that someone like lori drew is allowed to change their phone number/address/whatever else she has changed (probably everything, because i cant imagine that she hasnt been harrassed in every possible way already) and to not have it published. i understand privacy laws and all that but someone knows her new phone number, etc. i would sincerely enjoy sending this woman hate mail, and anyone who thinks that is wrong can shove it, because i don’t think this woman got what she deserved through the court system and pardon me for wanting a little justice in the world, i.e. to make this woman’s life as miserable as possible until the day she no longer breathes (and by this I DO NOT WANT HER TO KILL HERSELF OR BE HARMED BY ANYONE ELSE, merely i want her to remember what she did every single day of the rest of her life). i genuinely do not think that woman has remorse for what she did, which makes her even more appalling to humanity. but, i wont go on and on about how horrible lori drew is, i am just wondering if anyone has or knows how to get access to her new phone number and/or address. i think it could be considered public safety because if she has moved i think anyone in the same town would like to know to warn their own daughters against associating with hers, as they may end up killing themselves over it. i can see the headline now, “stupid bitch lori drew strikes again: will she be punished justly this time?” ANYWAYS, please let me know where to find this information. i swear i do not wish physical harm on this woman, but i enthusiastically admit that i do wish her a complete mental breakdown.
@Confused:
It wouldn’t be hard to just get a stock photo off of an image disk and use that as a personal picture.
As far as the comments about Megan being mentally ill…none of you have obviously had those kinds of issues where a single comment would drive you over the edge. Lori knew this and said horrible things anyway. She is freakin’ psycho to want to bully some girl like that anyway.
If it was just her daughter that said hateful things I could probably write it off as just mean girls and Megan was just a victim of school bullying. But it wasn’t. Lori was supposed to be an adult. She should have been the one to make her daughter step back a few paces and teach her that she should take the high road and just not deal with Megan anymore for whatever reason she didn’t like her.
But she didn’t She decided to be childish herself and now a child is dead because of it.
It doesn’t matter about Megan’s family or that she had low self esteem. What matters is Lori knew her situation and took full advantage of it just out of plan ole’ meanness. An ADULT should know better.
Dude leave her alone, I think she knows her mistake and you guys are only making things worse. If you look at it you are just like her, saying such rude things such as, she should die, what is wrong with you? The girl was already mentally, physically, and emotionally stressed and if not Lori Drew it could have been anything or anyone that could make her crack. Suicides happen rather it involves the social networking sites or not. I think she should have to go through such a harsh time she’s learned her mistake and has to live with it every day. There is no point in making it worser for her by posting such rude and obnoxicious things. Sure what she did what extremley heinous but then again, aren’t we all?
Kat,
Drew has yet to take responsiblity. Your reasoning is just like her, blame the victim. My guess is that you have never experienced bullying and were probably a bully. It is easier you and Drew to blame the victim than admit your own actions can hurt others.
No we aren’t all heartless monsters like Drew and by your own admission you.
Maybe if you had ever experienced torture at the hands of heartless monsters like Drew you would have a little compassion.
Drew was an adult who set out to destroy a child because her little spoiled brats feelings were hurt. Megan didn’t want to be friends with Drew’s little brat anymore. Gee, I wonder why? Probably because the little brat is a heartless monster like her mom.
Of course of all this is probably wasted on you.
