"The police say they are waiting to find out if Mr. Thomas was dead before he was hit by the police car."

Just one of a number of items about this story I find distressing. You're dead-on-balls-accurate in saying "does that really matter...?"

Absolutely no way that I could ever imagine the officer did not feel the impact, hear something or find that his cruiser was behaving sluggishly. I feel even the small potholes and road imperfections when driving over them - regardless of what vehicle I am driving.

Has the officer been drug tested, let alone lie-tested?

I am just too astounded by reading this to even begin to comprehend the officers actions, let alone the major fuck up that the police department made by not immediately acknowledging the dead man's family. So very sad on a number of levels.

I think they're already setting the stage to blame it on the victim in this case too, Dee.

I agree, the speed of the car has nothing to do with walking. I'm glad the insurance company proved the cop was lying in your dad's case. The bottom line is that if there is a car in the intersection, you can't go whether you have a stop sign or not. It seems like those cops were not above twisting common sense as well as reality when it suited their purposes to do so.

Cops always take up for other cops, no matter what the other cop does. It's really very sickening. Worse, they are only very rarely held accountable for their actions, even when they falsify reports in covering for each other.

Yet, cops still wonder why they are not respected by the general public.

I'm sure they will somehow rule it was the victim's fault.

That is what happened to my parents. My dad was disabled (walked on crutches). The cop actually said that because my dad moved slow when walking it was his fault for his car being in the intersection, even if the off duty cop ran a stop sign.

Gee, the speed of the car has nothing to do with walking. In fact because he used hand controls the car actually accelerated faster.

Interested in seeing how the state handle's the officer.

Excellent point, Gibson.

I understand that the state is doing an autopsy today. I'll be looking later to see if there are anymore updates.

It bothers me of the moral compass of some of the people who are entrusted with the obligations of our justice system. Not only are scums like these supposed to be protecting us and keeping order, they are also protecting the ones who are doing the complete opposite. Who's to say that this man was not killed on impact and dragged alive?

The officer involved should be suspended immediately. Also, the investigation should be done by outsiders

Several years ago my parents were hit by an off-duty officer who ran a stop sign. Of course my dad who was in the middle of the intersection was ruled at fault even after their insurance company proved the cop was lying.

[...] daymore wrote an interesting post today onHere’s a quick excerptIn Ironton, Ohio last night, a pedestrian was hit and killed by a police cruiser, driven by a cop on his way to work. Unbelievably, the cruiser dragged the man for blocks, and the cop allegedly didn’t even realize he was dragging a human underneath his cruiser. In fact, he dragged the man all the way to the police station, over a half a mile away! I don’t buy that “I didn’t know I’d hit someone” story at all. If a driver hit a dog, they’d know it, and they’d know if they were dragging the dog because there would be noise and bumps involved. Given that a human is much bigger than a dog, how much more would someone realize they were dragging a human? I suspect the cop was hoping the guy’s body would disengage from the cruiser, and then he could be the first on […] [...]
