MSNBC is reporting that New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, the former Attorney General of that state, has admitted to being involved in a prostitution ring.
I guess he can’t claim he didn’t know it was a crime, LOL.
While I’ll admit that the news is giggle-worthy, and will probably produce a lot of good jokes for The Daily Show, Jay Leno, David Letterman, etc., I also have to admit that I don’t think prostitution should be illegal. It’s merely a contract for services, just like any other, between consenting adults.
There’s really not much difference between prostitution, and what a lot of women (and many men) do every single day, picking up a stranger in a bar or other public place, and accepting gifts in exchange for sexual favors. The only difference is that, with a prostitute, you actually know up front how much it’s going to end up costing you, LOL.
Besides, if you’ve read my FAQ, you know that my mother was a prostitute (it wasn’t a joke when I wrote that), so I know a little more than the average bear (and a lot more than I’d really want to know) about that particular profession. I see no reason why it should be illegal, since it is not the government’s place to legislate morality. The illegality of prostitution, in and of itself, produces crime as it helps fund other criminal acts being committed by organized crime and other unsavory types. After all, most prostitutes have a pimp, since it is a profession fraught with danger.
In my opinion, prostitution should be legalized. It’s not something I’d ever be interested in doing myself, but at the same time I don’t think it’s the government’s place to stick their noses into anyone’s sex life, for any reason, as long as what is happening is consensual between the parties involved.
It seems like prostitution really hurts the prostitutes more than the real criminals.
Oops, I mean prostitution being illegeal
Oops, I mean prostitution being illegal only hurts the prostitutes not the real criminals
I absolutely agree with you, Dee. The prostitutes get to keep only a small amount of the money they make, since the pimps take the rest for “protection”, yet the women are taking all the risk. It’s crazy.
If prostitution were legalized, the women wouldn’t need a pimp to protect them, because they could call the police and report crimes against them, like anyone else, without fearing prosecution themselves.
I hate it when I do that, LOL. I understood what you meant, though.
It seems that provide social services, educational or other opportunities to help these women.
A lot of women are perfectly content being prostitutes, though, and don’t really want anything but to be left alone.
I am sure that is true. Haven’t really had any dealings with prostitutes except for the mom of a couple of gang kids I worked with.
