I have been watching the program “Celebrity Rehab” on VH1 this season. To be honest, I’m addicted to the show. For those of you who are interested in psychology, addiction, celebrities, or reality television, I highly recommend the show. It is on Thursdays at 10 pm ET on VH1, but also plays at other times through the week.

Steven Adler
There is one participant in particular who I like very much, and have since the first episode. Steven Adler is the original drummer for Guns n Roses, back when they were a huge force in rock music, and was kicked out of the band for using too many drugs. I’m not a huge Guns N Roses fan to the point that I know the band members by name (except of course for Axl Rose and Slash), but as a rock enthusiast I am very familiar with them, and they do have some very good music (at least their older stuff from back when Steven was in the band, I’m unfamiliar with their newer work).
The question which came to my mind was, how many drugs do you have to take, to get kicked out of Guns N Roses for taking too many? I mean, all these guys were all using a LOT of drugs back then.
I’m not sure why I like Steven Adler so much, except that he is childlike and does remind me of my son a little (long curly blonde hair, very playful personality). The addictions specialist (Dr. Drew Pinsky) says that Steven is so childlike because he stopped maturing when he started using drugs, and never finished maturing because he never got sober.
And we’re talking about someone who admits to being sober for only two days since the age of eleven, if you can imagine that. He’s now 43. It’s amazing he’s still alive. He even shoots heroin into his neck veins, which is something I had never even heard of anyone doing before.
Steven seems to have been trying to kill himself for many years, both subconsciously and consciously. At one point he took 100 valiums, drank a large bottle of Jaegermeister, and shot up 3/4 gram of heroin. He still didn’t die, but he did have a stroke. It seems now mostly to affect his speech and some of his facial movements, though at the time he was told that he would never again use the left side of his body.
Yet he still didn’t get sober.
After he was signed up to do the “Celebrity Rehab” show, with only two weeks left before checking into rehab, his brother (who keeps an eye on him) called the doctor to Steven’s home. Steven was acting in a psychotic manner, and he was actively suicidal to the point that he said that every day, all he wants to do is die. It was incredibly sad. Apparently what set him off was that he had talked to Slash, with whom he has been friends since they were about 13, and found out that Slash didn’t want him to play drums on his new solo CD. Steven was crying, saying he wants his best friend Slash back. Dr. Drew checked him into a locked psychiatric facility, just to keep him alive long enough to get him into rehab. By the time he checked into rehab, he had already detoxed. The person we saw prior to his hospitalization, who was shooting heroin and smoking crack (and who knows what else), and the person we see now, are two completely different people. But they are both people in an unbelievable amount of pain.
They’ve been delving into Steven’s childhood, and his relationship with his family, and especially his mother.
He came home from school one day when he was eleven, and his belongings were out on the street, and the locks were changed. His stepfather had said “it’s him or me”, and since the stepfather was supporting the family, Steven was out. His mother and stepfather had a child of their own, and Steven was in the way.
There’s no way that doesn’t affect someone for life. What a horrible thing to do to a child, no wonder he is so incredibly self-destructive. I don’t care what the circumstances may be, you don’t put a child out of the house, especially in that manner or at that age. Of course, after he became rich and famous, mommy dearest wanted to be his mother again, and he even ended up supporting her and his stepfather, despite what they had done to him.
He is currently suing his mother, by the way. Apparently she got control of all his money when he had the stroke 12 years ago, and he claims that she has stolen millions from him. Given what else he has said about his mother, and given that public records clearly show that he has made zillions and still profits from Guns N Roses (for anyone not familiar with GnR, they sold many millions of records and easily sold out entire stadiums for years and years), I believe that could very well be true.
I found this video outtake from the show, wherein Steven discusses his childhood and his mother. What he describes from his childhood is a recipe for extremely self-destructive behavior. Someone should knock his mother upside the head, what a self-absorbed bitch to do this to her son. As a mother myself, I cannot even imagine doing what she did to her son.
(The video wouldn’t post here, as usual with non-youtube videos, so you can access it on my auxiliary blog; I suggest strongly that you let it start playing then pause it so it can load; otherwise, you will get a lot of stops and starts due to buffering.)
ARGH! I just don’t understand some so-called mothers! I would rather be out on the street with my kids than with a useless jealous man! For every useless man like that there are just as many decent ones!
Of course he supported them…all he ever wanted was their love and approval. He wasn’t old enough a the time to know how or that he could cut his ties with them…f*cking losers.
Karma will get them though.
That really angers me. My mom who was an educator often said that what many kids really neeeded was a parentectomy.
I do find it strange that anyone could get kicked out of GNR for doing to many drugs
I am very happy to find others who are in support of Steven Adler. I too can relate to him , because I was abandoned and abused as a child. The only thing is, I never had the drug addiction. I had a counselor tell me the 5 year old little girl inside me is who has run the show for most of my life.I am 42 years old. Maybe that is why I have compassion for Steven Adler, because he childlike too. I was a slight fan of gun’s and roses and when I started watching celebraty rehab, I was shocked over Steven’s appearance and speach impediment. I alway’s thought he was the best looking in gun’s and roses. I am eager to see how everything works out with him with each new episode. I can see him move on and become a drug counselor himself. I only hope the best for him. Thank you all for your compasion for him.
I agree. What a beautiful person he is. You just want to hug him for hours. Good luck Steven. Many people support you!!
I too, am so happy to see all of the positive thoughts pouring out in regard to Steven Adler. There is just something about his spirit that shines through. He seems to love life, and love others. It will be a beautiful thing when he can love himself as much?
He seems to be a real nice guy with a good soul. I hope the show helps him out and can relieve some of his pain.

I just love Steven. He is so sweet. I hate his mother for what she did to this 11 year old child. As for taking his money, what a loser she is. His wife sure is lucky. He’s a very good looking guy and I hope rehab will help him. Steven, keep it up, you can do it.
[...] I’m here to remember the good times…..Back when it was Slash, Duff, Izzy, Axl, even Steven Adler (check him out in Celebrity Rehab…quite sad). Anyway enjoy classic [...]
steve you should be very proud of youre self hang in there i have seen celeb rehab and you are doing good dont give up the fight.
Steve,
You are my hero..why, because you are still here…a testament to your inner strength. Hang tough, and remember, anyone can be a mother or father, but it takes an unselfish, caring loving person to be a parent. You never had that, but you have the admiration and respect of many of us who have walked in your shoes..stay strong, keep off the drugs, and soon you will realize that life really IS worth living!
Ok, do the last few commentors realize this isn’t Steve’s blog?
Steven, you were not kicked out of GNR for doing
too many drugs!!! Axl told me he kicked you out because
you wanted to or slept w/Erin.
I lived nextdoor to him in the Towers.
He was JELOUS of you.
I like you so much. You kissed my hand @ Exodus
a few yrs ago & I pray & hope you stay sober/
You are the lovliest person.
I hop you read this.

ok, you all need some reality yourselves…finding blame does nothing to help the situation. victims of abuse don’t need a pity party…it just perpetuates their pain and doesn’t allow them to move up and forward outa their victim role. he’s in his freakin’ 40’s, people. yes, he’s adorable looking but not so adorable acting and needs to take responsibility for his part and choices in his substance abuse. otherwise there’s no hope for him. cute only goes so far and that’s what he’s cashed in on. i too hope the best for him and those that love him. he’s got some medical issues too; the stroke may cause instability of moods, not to mention the likely brain damage it may’ve caused on top of drug usage effects.
Obviously you are not too familiar with drug addiction. I’ve seen countless people shoot into their neck veins, usually the jugular. It is not at all uncommon. It’s also not the worst place I’ve seen people shoot up in, but I won’t gross you out. As for Steven Adler’s sad story about his fucked up childhood, it’s just that, another sad story. For every junkie I’ve known who had a sad story (and I’ve know a lot of junkies), there are 5 more who don’t have any story, sad or otherwise, to use as an excuse for becomming an addict. We become drug addicts because we like the way it feels to be high. Period. You don’t have to come from a bad neighborhood, or a bad family. In fact you can have every advantage and still get strung out – because it feels good.
I’ve never seen the show, but I suspect that Mr. Adler needs to face reality – he is his only real enemy. Then maybe he can stop using, and stop looking for an excuse.
Mr. Adler IS facing reality….he is facing his addiction and the issues that brought him to that with a licensed doctor to assist him in dealing with those issues. Abandonment issues are not an excuse to use, but real psychological issues that scar children and when they have not been dealt with and subsequently drugs take the place of dealing with the issue, developementally, the child stops developing…..emotionally and psychologically. Mr. Adler is there to deal with those issues so he can a). stop the addiction and the need to “medicate the negative feelings of abandonment” so he can b). begin to develop emotionally, psychologically and probably spiritually. The last thing he needs are people who know little to nothing about what he is going through to judge his experience and to tell him to FACE REALITY as if that isn’t exactly what he is doing. It is, and it’s, quite frankly, one of the hardest things to do when you have stunted it because your primary care giver, the one that is suppose to love and nurture you (MOM) throws you away. Steven didn’t deserve that….nobody does!!! Enough said. I wish nothing but the best for Mr. Adler because he is a human being and we all deserve to be treated humanely.
I started watching Celerbrity Rehab on VH1 for as long as it has been on, and I didn’t realize that he was Steven Adler from G/R. This man has such a Sweet Soul, I guess that is what you can call it, I don’t call him child like I truly believe he’s got something? I can’t put my finger on it? yes he’s been though so much! but he has a Good Karma about him, I am more interested in him now than back when he was with Guns and Roses, One thing tells me he is a wonderful person, Could it be that being in the mess he has been in his heart wants better things? I just feel he is a good SOUL!
